"This may be crazy, but I want to retire early. Life is short. I have dreams to live."
Tamika has worked for state government for most of her career. Over the past 20 years, she has held different positions in human resources as an analyst, an affirmative action officer, a trainer, and most recently an HR manager position. Tamika enjoys helping people every day, but she knows that she has to help herself, too, especially when it comes to funding her retirement.
For the past two years Tamika has been dreaming about retiring early at age 63. This dream includes more free time for ballroom dancing, being the “best aunt ever” and long-distance bicycle getaways. While there are lots of unknowns about the future, she is taking steps to ensure she has choices and a strong financial future.
Tamika is vested in the Wisconsin Retirement System, so she can count on her pension for some income. She plans to start making annual additional contributions to her WRS account, too. Tamika considered opening a Roth IRA, but decided to join the Wisconsin Deferred Compensation Program instead. She likes the WDC’s online calculators and watching her pre-tax contributions grow. Tamika also recently purchased long-term care insurance.
