Under Wisconsin law, you may be eligible for a WRS service credit based on your periods of active military service.

If you were in the military before January 1, 1974, you may receive up to four years of Wisconsin Retirement System creditable service. This credit is based on when you stopped working in a WRS job and the amount of creditable service you earned while working under the WRS.

If you stopped working a WRS job on or after January 1, 1982, but before March 9, 1984:
  • You must have at least twenty (20) years of creditable service
  • Your military discharge must be something other than dishonorable
If you stopped working a WRS job on or after March 9, 1984:
  • You can receive one year of military service credit for each five years of WRS creditable service earned (5, 10, 15, or 20 years), up to a maximum of four years
  • Your military discharge must be something other than dishonorable.
