WRS Military Service Credit - Pre-1974 Military Service Credit

Pre-1974 Military Service Credit is based on Wisconsin state law. It applies to military service spent in the U.S. Armed Forces prior to January 1, 1974, and provides you with Wisconsin Retirement Service (WRS) service credit for your military service, up to a maximum of four years. It also has the following requirements:

If you terminated WRS-covered employment on or after January 1, 1982, but before March 9, 1984:

  • you must have 20 years of creditable service under the WRS; and
  • your military discharge must have been other than dishonorable.

If you terminated WRS-covered employment on or after March 9, 1984:

  • you can receive one year of military service credit for each five years of creditable service, up to a maximum of four years; and
  • your military discharge must have been other than dishonorable.

Note: Pre-1974 Military Service Credit is not applied to your WRS account until you apply for retirement. If you have military service credit on or after January 1, 1974, visit Continuous Military Service Credit and USERRA.
