Proposal to Increase WRS Minimum Retirement Age,
Change Benefit Formula
2017 SB 190 was recently introduced in the Wisconsin State Legislature. The bill increases the Wisconsin Retirement System minimum retirement age and changes the formula for calculating a retirement benefit.
Under the proposal:
- The minimum retirement age would increase by two years for protective occupation members (e.g., police and firefighters) and by five years for all other members.
- The formula method for calculating a WRS retirement benefit would change from the three highest years of earnings to the five highest years of earnings.
These changes would only apply to members hired on or after the effective date of the bill.
