The process to elect Teachers Retirement Board members has begun. There are three seats available for Wisconsin Retirement System active teachers. Self-nominations are the first step in the process. If you’re interested in serving on the Board and an active WRS covered teacher (excluding those employed by the Milwaukee Public School District), download the nomination materials or contact the Department of Employee Trust Funds as soon as possible to ensure you have time to gather signatures and return the paperwork.
The Department of Employee Trust Funds supports a diverse and inclusive environment for our staff and board members. ETF is seeking a diverse pool of nominees for board vacancies. People identifying with traditionally underrepresented groups, particularly women, people of color, and persons with disabilities, are encouraged to submit their nomination.
How to declare candidacy:
- Candidates self-nominate and gather a minimum of 25 signatures from other teachers qualified to vote in this election.
- Send completed nomination materials to ETF — they must be received by February 22, 2021.
- Download nomination materials now or request ETF mail them to you. Email BoardElections@etf.wi.gov. Write to ETF, Retirement Board Liaison, P.O. Box 7931, Madison, WI 53707-7931.
The Teachers Retirement Board recently asked the Governor and the Legislature to merge the Teachers Retirement Board into the two other boards (Wisconsin Retirement Board and Employee Trust Funds Board) that oversee the Department of Employee Trust Funds. All three boards worked together to request this change because the current board structure is out of date, and a merger would help reduce duplication and provide better governance. The merger could go into effect in July 2021.
If this change is enacted and you are elected by your peers to this seat on the Teachers Retirement Board, your seat on the Board could expire in 2021. ETF will provide updates on the proposal to combine the boards in its newsletter in 2021. Please contact us at BoardFeedback@etf.wi.gov if you have any questions.
