IRS Limits for 2022
The Internal Revenue Service limit on Section 457 deferrals for 2022 is $20,500 or 100% of your compensation (as defined by the Internal Revenue Code), whichever is less. This is a $1,000 increase from 2021.
The age 50+ catch-up contribution is $6,500 in 2022, the same as in 2021. This would equal a maximum possible contribution of $27,000 if you are age 50 or older during the 2022 calendar year.
The special catch-up contribution amount also increased for 2022; this means you can contribute an additional $20,500 in 2022 if you are within three years of normal retirement age, for a total maximum under the special catch-up option of $41,000. The additional amount you may be able to contribute under the special catch-up contribution will depend on the amount that you were able to contribute in previous years but did not.
Note: If you are eligible for both the age 50+ catch-up and special 457 catch-up, you may not take advantage of both in the same calendar year.
