This brochure provides general information about the income tax liability on your Wisconsin Retirement System benefits. The tax treatment of WRS benefits is generally similar for federal and Wisconsin income tax purposes.
Apply for a separation benefit. A separation benefit is a one-time, lump-sum payment consisting only of employee contributions, additional contributions (if applicable), and accumulated interest.
Today, the Group Insurance Board approved benefit changes for plan year 2026. In addition, the Board decided to not adjust cost-sharing for any of the Group Health Insurance Program plan designs offered.
