When you leave state employment, your employer calculates your sick leave credits and certifies the amount to ETF. You will receive a letter from ETF that has your sick leave credit balance and health plan information. Please direct any questions regarding this calculation to your payroll representative.

Accumulated Sick Leave Credit Conversion (ASLCC) Calculations

To calculate your Accumulated Sick Leave Credit Conversion (ASLCC) balance, your hours of unused sick leave are multiplied by your highest base hourly rate of pay with the state.

Formula

Example

Your unused sick leave hours

1,680 hours

x     Your highest hourly wage

x     $22.00 per hour

=     Your sick leave credit balance

$36,960.00

Supplemental Health Insurance Conversion Credit (SHICC) Calculations

You may be able to get more credits if you have 15 years of continuous state service or more, under the Supplemental Health Insurance Conversion Credit (SHICC) Program. For more information on SHICC, check with your employer benefits specialist.

If you have used over 500 hours of sick leave in the last 3 years for a single illness or injury, you may qualify to have SHICC credits restored to you. Check with your employer benefits specialist to see if this applies.

Your SHICC hours are calculated based on your years of adjusted continuous state service and your hours of unused sick leave at termination. SHICC hours are calculated differently for protective employment category employees than for other employment categories.

Only full calendar years of continuous state service are included. For example, if you work from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2019, you will have 20 years of continuous state service. If you work from January 1, 2000 to December 29, 2019, you will only have 19 years of continuous state service.

Non-Protective Employment Categories

For your first 24 full years of adjusted continuous service, you can receive matching hours of sick leave up to a maximum of 52 hours per year, multiplied by your full years of adjusted continuous service. For your full years of continuous service over 24 years, you can receive matching hours of sick leave up to a maximum of 104 hours per year, multiplied by your full years of continuous service over 24 years.

Example: A state employee has 28 full years of continuous service with the state and retires with 2,150 hours of unused sick leave (ASLCC).

Formula

Example

24 years of service x 52 hours

1,248 hours

4 years x 104 hours per year

+ 416 hours

Maximum possible number of SHICC hours

1,664 hours

+ ASLCC hours

+ 2,150 hours

Total hours converted to sick leave credits

3,814 hours

x highest base rate of pay

x $22.50 per hour

Credit available to pay health insurance premiums

$85,815.00
